The earthquakes of Zabid and Mawza, 916 AH
In the year 916 the city of Zabid was struck by a severe earthquake, then shaken again and a third time. On the afternoon of that day a great star fell from the east towards Syria, visible in daylight, and it was followed by a violent trembling and loud thunder 1.
Then the city of Mawza and its surroundings were struck by a great earthquake of a kind no one had heard of. Tremors continued by night and day, small and large, and they harmed the people of the district severely. Houses cracked, hardly a house was left without damage, the land prepared for farming split open, graves were knocked down and the wells were mixed up 1.
In the same year another great star fell at midnight, and the world was lit up by it 1.
