Overview
In early Dhu al-Qa'da 564 AH the Sudanese troops in Cairo fought the army of Salah al-Din between the two palaces, after the killing of Mu'tamin al-Khilafa. 2
The cause
Mu'tamin al-Khilafa was the eunuch of the palace of the Fatimid caliph al-Adid and the one who controlled it. He was killed after his correspondence with the Franks inviting them to Egypt was exposed. Salah al-Din dismissed the palace servants and appointed Baha' al-Din Qaraqush over them. 2
The fighting
The Sudanese were angered by his killing, because he had favoured them. The report says that their number exceeded fifty thousand; they sought war against the Salahi troops, and fought between the two palaces, and killing grew among both sides. 2
The end
Salah al-Din sent men who burned their quarter known as al-Mansura. They were routed, asked for safety and were expelled from Egypt, except those who took refuge in Giza. Shams al-Dawla, the brother of Salah al-Din, crossed to them with a body of the army, and destroyed most of them with the sword. 2
The Gregorian date (around August 1169 CE) is derived from the Hijri date.
