The death of Khushqadam and the succession of Yalbay, Tumurbugha and then Qaytbay
Sultan al-Zahir Khushqadam died on Saturday, the tenth of Rabiʿ I 872 AH, after six and a half years of rule. On that same day al-Malik al-Zahir Yalbay al-Muʾayyadi took the sultanate. He was the fourteenth of the Circassian sultans. The amirs deposed him two months less four days later, because he was too weak to manage the realm. Then al-Malik al-Zahir Tumurbugha al-Zahiri, the fifteenth, took the sultanate. He used to make bows and arrows with his own hands and shot very well, but his rule was not secure. It lasted two months less one day, and he was deposed and exiled to Alexandria. On the afternoon of Monday, the sixth of Dhu al-Hijja 872 AH, al-Malik al-Ashraf Qaytbay al-Mahmudi took the sultanate. He was the sixteenth of the Circassian rulers and their sons in Egypt 1.
