Overview
Ibn al-Athir relates in "al-Kamil" that Qarin gathered a large number of men from the region of al-Tabasayn, the people of Badghis, Herat and Quhistan, and came forward with forty thousand. 2
The dispute over command
Qays ibn al-Haytham and Abd Allah ibn Khazim disputed the command. Ibn Khazim produced a letter he had forged, saying that he was the commander of Khurasan if there was war. 2
The stratagem
Ibn Khazim marched against Qarin with four thousand men. He ordered the people to take fat, wrap rags, cotton and oil around the points of their spears, and set them alight. His vanguard skirmished with them at midnight, and the polytheists saw fires on the right and left, which frightened them. Then Ibn Khazim fell upon them, killed Qarin and routed his companions, and much captive booty was taken. 2
