Conquest of Tabaristan

فتح طبرستان

29 AH

Tabaristan

When Uthman made Sa'id ibn al-As governor of Kufa in 29 AH, the marzban of Tus wrote both him and Abdallah ibn Amir of Basra inviting them to Khurasan — whichever prevailed would hold it; Ibn Amir outstripped him, so Sa'id raided Tabaristan — with him, it is said, al-Hasan and al-Husayn the sons of Ali, though others say he raided on no writ at all — taking Tamisa and the village Namna and treating Jurjan's king for two hundred thousand dirhams.

Overview

al-Baladhuri relates that Uthman appointed Sa'id ibn al-As over Kufa in 29 AH. The patrician of Tus wrote to him and to Abd Allah ibn Amir, governor of Basra, inviting them to Khurasan on condition that he would make king over it whichever of the two prevailed. Ibn Amir got there first, and Sa'id raided Tabaristan. 1

The campaign

It is said that al-Hasan and al-Husayn, sons of Ali, were with him on the campaign. It is also said that he raided it without a letter reaching him. He took Tumaysa and Namana, and made peace with the king of Jurjan for two hundred thousand dirhams. 1

The delegation of Najran

Sixty riders of Christian Najran came to Medina in 9 AH led by the Aqib, the Sayyid and Bishop Abu Haritha; when they declined Islam the Prophet offered the mutual invocation of God's curse (mubahala) with Fatima, al-Hasan and al-Husayn, they asked instead for terms, and a treaty granted them God's protection in exchange for two thousand garments a year.
