The Prophet's request for a writing in his last illness

4 June 632 CE · 8 Rabi' I 11 AH

Medina

In his last illness the Prophet ﷺ asked for a writing that would keep the community from error; those present disagreed, one said the book of God was enough, and the writing was not made. Sallabi reads the episode within the Sunni frame as a matter of ijtihad that no one was blamed for; Imami readings that take it as a designation of Ali he treats as false.

Opinions on the question

The question: What did the Prophet intend by the writing, and why was it not made?

First opinion · Sunni tradition (the museum's frame)Main reference

Sallabi, through Qadi Iyad, al-Qurtubi and Ibn Taymiyya: the Prophet left the writing because of the dispute, and he had already delivered the religion (the verse of completion); the disagreement among the Companions was ijtihad, no one was rebuked, and Umar's counsel was a legitimate reading.
More opinions (1)

Shia (Twelver) viewOther opinion

Imami readings, as reported by the book, hold that the Prophet meant the writing as a designation of Ali and that his wish was blocked; Sallabi refutes this at length, saying it would make the Prophet neglect what God commanded.

Abu Bakr leads the prayers during the final illness

When the illness grew too heavy for the Prophet to come out, he sent word that Abu Bakr should lead the people; Abu Bakr led seventeen prayers, the Prophet once joined him sitting at his left, and Sunni tradition reads the appointment as a sign of Abu Bakr's standing.
