Overview
Al-Maqqari, quoting the "al-Bayan al-Mughrib", says that al-Mansur ibn Abi Amir set out from Cordoba on a summer raid in Jumada al-Akhira 387 AH, his forty-eighth raid. He aimed for the city of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia. 2
The route
He built a large fleet at the palace of Abu Danis and set a bridge over the river Duwayra. The army crossed lands, rivers and inlets, and took the fortress of Shant Balaya. 2
Santiago
They reached Santiago in Sha'ban and found it empty of its people. Al-Maqqari says that they took booty, demolished the walls and the church, and al-Mansur set a guard over the tomb. They found only an old monk sitting on the tomb, and he ordered him left alone. 2
Return
The armies reached the island of Shant Manakish, the furthest point, according to the text, that no Muslim had reached before them. They came back to Cordoba with booty. 2
