The killing of Mardawij ibn Ziyad

قتل مرداويج بن زياد

935 CE · 323 AH

Isfahan

In 323 the Daylamite ruler Mardawij ibn Ziyad was killed at Isfahan by his own Turkish ghilman. He had staged a Zoroastrian-style festival for the winter night — mountains ringed with bonfires, two thousand birds released with oil-soaked legs, a banquet of a hundred whole roasted horses — then humiliated his Turks, who seized the moment and killed him 1.

Overview

In 323 AH Mardawij ibn Ziyad al-Daylami, lord of the Jibal lands, was killed near Isfahan by his Turkish slave soldiers. 2

The cause in Ibn al-Athir

Ibn al-Athir says that Mardawij greatly harmed his Turks, and said that the Turks were devils. So they wished for his destruction. 2

The night of the feast

On the night of the feast he ordered wood gathered and lit on the mountains, and birds and a great number of roasted animals gathered on a great table. When he rode around the table he thought little of it all, and was angry. On the fourth day he ordered the saddles taken off the animals and put on the backs of the Turks, and whoever refused was beaten. 2

The senior Turkish slave soldiers seized the opportunity and killed him. 2

The Gregorian date is derived from the Hijri date.
