Overview
al-Baladhuri relates that Umar appointed Utba ibn Farqad al-Sulami over Mosul in 20 AH, and the people of Nineveh fought him. He took its eastern fort by force and crossed the Tigris, and the people of the other fort made peace with him on the jizya and on permission for those who wished to leave. 1
After the conquest
He found monasteries in Mosul, and its people made peace with him on the jizya. Then he took al-Marj and its villages and the strongholds of the Kurds. Umar dismissed Utba and appointed Harthama ibn Arfaja al-Bariqi, who founded the city, settled the Arabs in their dwellings and built the congregational mosque. Sa'id ibn Abd al-Malik built its wall, which al-Rashid demolished. 1
