Overview

Utba ibn Farqad al-Sulami, a commander among the commanders of the conquest of al-Jazira. al-Baladhuri reports that he conquered al-Tayrahan and Mosul, and sent to the people of Tikrit the letter of safe conduct written for them by al-Tasir and Hudhayfa ibn Mihsan 1.

His entry in al-Isaba

He is Utba ibn Farqad ibn Yarbu' ibn Habib ibn Malik ibn As'ad ibn Rifa'a al-Sulami, Abu Abd Allah; Ibn Sa'd said that Yarbu' is Farqad 2. He emigrated to Abyssinia and stayed there until he came with Ja'far ibn Abi Talib — some say he came earlier and witnessed Uhud and what followed — and he witnessed Khaybar and the Prophet ﷺ allotted him a share of it 2.

His conquests

Umar employed him in the conquests, and he conquered Mosul in 18 AH together with Iyad ibn Ghanm; he was in Azerbaijan, as Abu Uthman al-Nahdi narrated, then settled in Kufa and died there 2. Shu'ba narrated from Husayn from Utba's wife that Utba campaigned with the Prophet on two expeditions, and his wife Umm Asim narrated that the mange seized her in the Prophet's time, so he told her to bare herself and laid his hand on her belly and her back, and perfume clung to her from that day 2.

For younger visitors

Utba ibn Farqad was a Companion who emigrated to Abyssinia and returned, witnessed Khaybar, then became one of Umar ibn al-Khattab (may God be pleased with him)'s commanders and conquered Mosul with Iyad ibn Ghanm in 18 AH, spending his last years in Kufa 2.

Notes for researchers

  • On his nasab: "Farqad ibn Yarbu'" in the entry; Ibn Sa'd said Yarbu' is Farqad.
  • On his death: "died in Kufa" in the entry; Yahya ibn Bukayr's claim that he died in 44 AH is rebutted by Ibn Hajar since the man in al-Bukhari's report is Utba ibn Mas'ud.
