Overview

The battle of al-Ridaniyya, 923 AH (1517 CE), between the Ottoman sultan Selim I and the Mamluks under Tuman Bay, ended with the fall of the Mamluk state. 2

Its cause

al-Sallabi relates that Selim sent to Tuman Bay asking him to obey the Ottoman state. The Mamluks mocked his messenger and then killed him, so Selim decided on war and marched toward Egypt. 2

The outcome

The Ottomans won a crushing victory at the battle of Gaza and then at al-Ridaniyya, and Selim entered Egypt. al-Sallabi quotes Jarmard al-Nasiri as saying that it had not been heard that Egypt suffered such a calamity since it became a land of Islam. 2

Selim's words

al-Sallabi relates that Selim told Tuman Bay that he had come with the fatwa of the scholars of the lands, and that he had been heading to fight the Safavids and the Portuguese, but turned toward Egypt when al-Ghawri agreed with the Safavids and marched to Aleppo. This is Selim's own account, as attributed to him in the book. 2

Algiers enters Ottoman sovereignty (1519)

In early Dhu'l-Qa'da 925/October–November 1519 the notables of Algiers, at Khayr al-Din's order, sent the jurist Ahmad b. Qadi to Sultan Selim I with a letter (Topkapı archive no. 4656) asking to bind the city to the Ottoman state. Selim answered with the rank of beylerbey, artillery and 2,000 Janissaries; his name entered the pulpits and the coinage, and Algiers became the first North African province under Ottoman sovereignty — an entry al-Salabi stresses was by the inhabitants' appeal, not against their will.
