Ali's judgment: Shurahah flogged and stoned after confessing zina

between 656 and 661 CE

Shurahah confessed to zina while pregnant; Ali flogged her a hundred lashes on Thursday and stoned her on Friday, saying stoning is the Prophet ﷺ's sunna. The book notes that combining flogging with stoning is disputed among jurists.

Opinions on the question

The question: Should flogging and stoning be combined for zina?

First opinion · Sunni tradition (the museum's frame)Main reference

Al-Sallabi presents the ruling as Ali's judgment, citing Bukhari and Ahmad for the wording that the flogging was by the Book of God and the stoning by the sunna of the Prophet {cite:sallabi-ali-vol1 p. 304}.

Ali flogs the poet al-Najashi al-Harithi for drinking wine in Ramadan

Al-Najashi al-Harithi, a poet, drank wine in Ramadan; Ali flogged him eighty lashes and jailed him, then flogged him twenty more the next day, saying the lashes were for his defiance of God and breaking the fast. The book cites the case as an example of prison as ta'zir.
