Al-Sakhawi's first pilgrimage by sea with his mother and family, 870/1466

حجة السخاوي الأولى بحراً مع أمه وعياله، ٨٧٠هـ/١٤٦٦م

c. March 1466 CE · Sha'ban 870 AH

Mecca → Medina

Al-Sakhawi made no pilgrimage until after Ibn Hajar's death: he sailed via Damietta with his mother, hearing scholars at al-Tur, Yanbu' and Jeddah, reached Mecca in early Sha'ban and stayed to perform the hajj of 870 (July-August 1466) with his parents, wife and eldest brothers. He read inside the Ka'ba, at the Hijr, on the caves of Thawr and Hira', at Mina and Masjid al-Khayf, before Abu al-Fath al-Maraghi, Taqi al-Din ibn Fahd, Abu al-Sa'adat ibn Zahira and over thirty other masters; on the return he read facing the Prophetic Chamber in Medina before al-Badr ibn Farhun 1. It was his first pilgrimage 2.

Al-Sakhawi's hajj of 896 and final settling in Medina, 1491

In 896/1491 al-Sakhawi made the hajj and sojourned in Mecca until mid-898, when he moved to Medina, stayed months and fasted Ramadan 898 there, then returned to Mecca in its Shawwal; he remained a resident of the two sanctuaries until his death, the people of both cities and their visitors transmitting from him and collecting his works. In his final years he completed or refined several texts there and trained students in hadith transmission.
