Summary
Striking the cheeks at a calamity
The jurists agree that striking the cheeks, scratching them, tearing the collar and similar acts at a calamity are forbidden, on the hadith in the Sahih: he is not of us who strikes the cheeks, tears the collar or calls with the calls of ignorance 1.
Retaliation for a slap
Most jurists hold that there is no retaliation for a slap on the cheek if it causes no wound or loss of use, because exact equality is impossible, and only discretionary punishment is due 2. Ibn al-Qayyim held that retaliation for a slap is due, citing the verses on like for like in punishment, and said Ahmad stated it and that those who disagreed departed from his school's text 2 3.
