'Behavioural disability'

الإعاقة السلوكية

Omar Abdelkafy rejects calling people with special needs 'disabled', holding that the truly disabled is one who has disabled himself from obedience, and that real disability is behavioural: envy, rancour and a foul tongue; this is his view.

Summary

The Sheikh mentions the question of one given a sick daughter, a blind son, a child who cannot hear or speak, or one with intellectual delay: why me? He says he dislikes the word 'disabled' society uses for them and prefers 'people with special needs'. 1 2 3

The truly disabled

He holds that the disabled one is he who has disabled himself from doing acts of obedience and good deeds, who has not entered the circle of faith and submission to God, while weak sight, hearing or understanding is no disability. 2 3 He holds that the envious, the rancorous and those who love to bring misery to Muslims are the real 'people with special needs', and that true disability is behavioural: knowing neither forbearance, pardon, overlooking nor good manners, but only a foul tongue. 3 4

A calamity is God's disposing

He holds that one struck by a calamity should know it is God's disposing of him, that the Owner disposes of what He owns, and that decrees do not run according to man's planning. 4 5 6 See: decree.

Haste and procrastination

Omar Abdelkafy lists four things which, if avoided, make a great misfortune unlikely: haste, which breeds regret; wrangling and much disputation, which breed confusion; procrastination, which breeds humiliation; and vanity, which breeds hatred.
