The adornment of desires and the goods of this world

تزيين الشهوات ومتاع الدنيا

On the verse that the love of desires is made attractive to people, Sha'rawi holds that the inclination which sustains life is permitted, that excess is blameworthy, and that adornment is something added to substance. Desires are keys that differ from person to person. The world is bounded by a person's life span, and lowering the gaze from what is forbidden fills the eye with what is lawful in the Hereafter 1 2 3 4.

Summary

On the verse that the love of desires is made attractive to people, Sha'rawi holds that the inclination which sustains life is permitted, and that excess in it is blameworthy 1 2.

Adornment and substance

He says adornment is something added to substance, and that God wants us to take life by its sustaining reality rather than its finery. He uses the sexual instinct in animals and humans as the example 2 5.

Lawful use

He holds that a person may direct love of wealth, horses and children towards good, that the Prophet ﷺ ordered horses to be trained, and that adornment may come from Satan or from the method of the faith. The deciding point is that each blessing has its work 3 6 7.

This world and the next

He holds that this world is measured by a person's life span in it, and that the Hereafter raises goodness by permanence and perfection. Lowering the gaze from the forbidden fills the eye in the Hereafter with the lawful. He holds that the vagueness of the time of death is the highest clarity 8 9 4.

Not yet checked

His reading of the sons as males, with its social reason, and his agronomy have not been checked against works of fiqh or agriculture. The academic view and any non-Sunni view have not been checked.

The ruling on one who abandons prayer

Al-Sallabi quotes Ali: whoever does not pray is an unbeliever. He then reports from al-Nawawi the dispute over one who neglects prayer while believing it obligatory: the majority (Malik, al-Shafi'i) hold him a sinner to be asked to repent, others hold him an unbeliever, a view ascribed to Ali; Abu Hanifa and the Kufans hold him not an unbeliever but to be disciplined.
