36 ھAfter the Camel, Ali wrote to Muawiya urging him to enter the community's allegiance, noting that the consultation belonged to the Emigrants and Helpers and that Talha and Zubayr had broken their pledge. Muawiya replied that he would not pledge until Uthman's killers were handed over, and disputed that the Medinan pledge bound the people of Syria. Al-Aqqad sees each closed door opening onto another, so that the letters ended without an agreement.

Muhammad Farid Wajdi's reading of the Qur'anic principle that God made people into peoples and tribes so that they might know one another, and that honour before God lies in taqwa rather than lineage. He holds that this principle struck tribal pride at its root and that Islam founded a universal kinship. The book calls the pre-Islamic world a time of constant conflict. Sha'rawi holds that God took a covenant from the prophets to believe in and support any messenger who comes confirming what they have, and that this prevents zealotry among the followers of messengers and keeps the succession of messages united. Wajdi holds that Islam, in its social and creedal foundations, is not a new religion but the one revealed to Noah and the prophets after him, and that differences among religions come from the distortion of what was sent down. He also reads the trust of God's vicegerency on earth as open to any people who command right and forbid wrong, not limited to one race. This is the author's view and is attributed to him.
