Summary

Dawud ibn Ali's speech when al-Saffah froze on the pulpit early in his caliphate: Dawud rose, spoke in his place, then stepped down. Several literary and historical accounts transmit it.

The book reports that al-Saffah stood on the pulpit at the start of his caliphate and could not speak. Dawud ibn Ali rose, praised the caliph and said that the commander does not want his word to outrun his deeds. 1

The account adds that the speaker appealed to what he held to be the right of Ali's line to rule; the museum records the claim as his, without a verdict. 1

The versions differ between Tabari and Ibn Abi al-Hadid, and the book attributes the words to their speaker. 1
