By Mustafa Hosny

هدايا الرحمن (برنامج رمضاني)

A short Ramadan programme by Mustafa Hosny of which the Assabile archive keeps twenty-nine video episodes of two and a half to five and a half minutes, the speaker alone; each presents one 'gift of the Merciful', a hadith on a small deed with a great reward (asking forgiveness for the believers, caring for the widow and the poor, secret charity, the Friday prayer, the funeral prayer, the two rak'as of repentance, the remembrance on entering the market, feeding a fasting person, the forenoon prayer, the last verses of al-Baqara, the formulas of tahlil and tasbih, the master supplication of forgiveness, guiding to good, removing harm from the road, walking to the mosque, wiping an orphan's head, invoking blessings on the Prophet ﷺ, sitting after the dawn prayer, much prostration and repeating the call to prayer), explains its meaning and then asks why God placed such a reward in it.

Summary

'Hadaya al-Rahman' ('Gifts of the Merciful') is a short Ramadan programme presented by Mustafa Hosny, of which the Assabile archive keeps twenty-nine video episodes of two and a half to five and a half minutes, the speaker talking alone in Egyptian colloquial. 1 The Arabic Wikipedia lists among his radio programmes one of this name on Nogoum FM in Ramadan 2014; what the archive holds are video recordings that give no date. 2 1 In the first episode he says that religion is built on ease, that anyone in any circumstances can be righteous through easy good deeds within everyone's reach, which he calls 'gifts from the Merciful', by which God forgives great sins and grants many good deeds. 3 4 5 In the last episode he says he has spoken of these gifts 'all through Ramadan', and that the deeds he chose were his own selection and research, the Qur'an and the Sunna being full of others. 6 7

Each episode follows a fixed plan: he cites the hadith, explains 'the meaning of the gift', then asks, 'do you know why God gives you this great reward?', and answers with an educational wisdom behind the reward, such as training in a heart free of rancour, sincerity, mercy or attachment to the mosques. 8 9 10 11 In the thirteenth episode, answering those surprised that sins should be forgiven for small deeds, he states that forgiveness is of two kinds: sins against people, which God does not forgive until the wronged person forgives, and sins against God, whose forgiveness is vast. 12 13 14 There he cites Ibn al-Qayyim in 'Tariq al-Hijratayn' as saying that the obedience of a human being who has the choice ranks higher with God than that of the angels, who do not disobey. 15 16

The episodes

Episode 1: introduction. Religion is built on ease; God reckons some people by their best deeds and passes over their bad ones; man was created weak. 17 18

Episode 2: caring for the widow and the poor. He cites a hadith that whoever strives to serve the widow and the poor earns the reward of one who fights in God's path and of one who stands in prayer by night and fasts by day; he says the highest worship is jihad, that the struggle against the self is called the greater jihad, and that one who cannot fast every day or pray all night reaches their reward by serving the needy. 19 20 21 22 23 The wisdom, he says, is that God wants to rid people of selfishness. 24

Episode 3: asking forgiveness for the believers. The detail is in istighfar. 25

Episode 4: secret charity. He cites the hadith of the seven who will be granted God's shade on the Day of Resurrection, among them one who hid his charity, and describes that day as one whose length is fifty thousand years. 26 27 28 The detail is in charity.

Episode 5: the Friday prayer. The detail is in the Friday prayer. 29

Episode 6: the funeral prayer. The detail is in the funeral prayer. 30

Episode 7: the two rak'as of repentance. He cites a hadith that whoever sins, then performs his ablution well, prays two rak'as and asks forgiveness, is forgiven, and says God does not lie in wait for the sinner, and that behind this lies a worship of the heart, 'the worship of feeling one's guilt'. 31 32 33 34 He notes that the hadith uses the particle fa, which expresses sequence without delay, meaning ablution straight after the sin, because God loves those who return to Him quickly. 35 36

Episode 8: the remembrance of the market. He cites a hadith narrated by Umar ibn al-Khattab on saying the formula of God's oneness on entering the market, with a reward of a thousand thousand good deeds; he explains that the Arabs had no word for 'million' and said 'a thousand thousand', and holds that every shop and mall today is a market. 37 38 39 He relates that one of the righteous went to Khurasan and told the hadith to Qutayba ibn Muslim, who would then ride to the gate of the market, say it and leave. 40 The wisdom, for him, is that markets are the centre of desires, so whoever remembers God there tells his Lord he has not forgotten Him at the times he is most taken up with himself. 41 42

Episode 9: feeding a fasting person. He cites a hadith that whoever gives a fasting person his iftar earns the same reward without any loss to the faster's reward, and says this can be with a date or a drink of water. 43 44 45 He holds that the hunger of the hungry and the poverty of the poor are a greater test for the rich, and salutes the young men who hand out juice and dates to fasting people in the streets. 46 47

Episode 10: the forenoon prayer. The detail is in the forenoon prayer. 48

Episode 11: the last verses of Surat al-Baqara. He cites a hadith that reciting the last two verses of Surat al-Baqara at night suffices the reciter, and says the scholars explained this as their sufficing for the night prayer and protecting him from Satan and from all harm while he sleeps. 49 50 He calls the two verses (al-Baqara 285 and 286) 'the constitution of the relationship between human beings and God': belief in all the messengers from Adam to Muhammad, and certainty that God burdens no soul beyond its capacity. 51 52 53

Episode 12: the formula of oneness a hundred times. He cites the hadith on saying the formula of God's oneness a hundred times a day, with its reward equal to freeing ten slaves, a hundred good deeds written, a hundred bad deeds erased and protection from Satan, and says it takes about ten minutes. 54 55 56 He estimates the price of a slave today, were there slaves, at about two thousand pounds, making the freeing equal to spending twenty thousand pounds, an estimate of his own. 57 He cites what he calls in psychology 'the theory of affirmation': repeating a meaning settles it in the heart. 58 59

Episode 13: why these gifts? An episode without a particular hadith, answering those surprised that forgiveness should be so easy; the detail is in the summary above. 12 60

Episode 14: charity and a good end. The detail is in charity. 61

Episode 15: sleeping in purity. He cites a hadith that an angel spends the night with whoever sleeps in a state of purity and asks forgiveness for him each time he turns over, says sleep is servanthood just as waking is, and quotes Ali ibn Abi Talib as hoping for reward for his sleep as for his night prayer. 62 63 64 65 He cites a hadith he attributes to al-Tirmidhi that God loves beauty and cleanliness, and says the Prophet was known by his perfume. 66 67

Episode 16: the master supplication of forgiveness. The detail is in istighfar. 68

Episode 17: putting on a new garment. He cites a hadith he attributes to al-Hakim's 'al-Mustadrak' on praising God when putting on a new garment, whose sayer is forgiven his past sins, and says sins begin to be written from the age of legal responsibility. 69 70 71 He says many sins veil inner sight, and that God wants His servant to rejoice in his clothing in this world and in His forgiveness in the next. 72 73

Episode 18: guiding to good. He cites a hadith that whoever guides others to right guidance earns the like of the rewards of those who act on it, without any loss to theirs, and gives examples: teaching someone to pray, to work with excellence, to apologise, or to give charity. 74 75 76 77 He holds that God loves to build the positive person who wants to see all people pleasing to God, and cites the hadith likening the believer to rain that benefits wherever it falls. 78 79 80

Episode 19: glorifying God a hundred times. He cites a hadith he attributes to al-Bukhari and Muslim that whoever glorifies and praises God a hundred times a day has his sins forgiven, however many they are, like the foam of the sea, which he explains as the froth on a sea whose end cannot be seen. 81 82 He explains glorification as declaring God free of error, shortcoming and unwisdom, and praise as contentment with all He does. 83 84

Episode 20: removing harm from the road. He relates that a man asked the Prophet to teach him something useful and was told to look for what harms people and move it from their path, and that faith has more than sixty branches, among them removing harm. 85 86 87 He widens harm to the negative word that breaks ambition, the wounding expression and clothing that tempts. 87 88

Episode 21: earning by one's own hand. He cites a hadith that the food dearest to God is what a servant earns by the toil of his hand, and that whoever sleeps tired from his work sleeps forgiven, and says this concerns the rights of God, not those of people. 89 90 91 He gives, without naming a source, a statistic that people in the Arab world work twenty-seven minutes out of eight hours (needs_source), and calls for excellence in work. 92 93

Episode 22: congregational prayer and walking to the mosque. He cites the hadith on the multiplied reward of prayer in congregation, that every step to the mosque raises a degree and removes a sin, that the angels pray for the worshipper as long as he stays in his place, and that he is in prayer as long as he waits for it. 94 95 96 97 98 He says the distance between two degrees of Paradise is as that between heaven and earth, and draws from it generous hospitality and attachment to the mosques. 99 11 100

Episode 23: wiping an orphan's head. The detail is in caring for the orphan. 101

Episode 24: invoking blessings on the Prophet. The detail is in invoking blessings on the Prophet. 102

Episode 25: sitting after the dawn prayer until sunrise. The detail is in the forenoon prayer. 103

Episode 26: walking to the mosque in the dark. He cites a hadith that whoever walks to the mosque in the darkness of night will meet God on the Day of Resurrection with light, and says the Day of Resurrection is dark because the sun's light goes while its heat remains, and that it comes as near to people's heads as a mile. 104 105 106 He says this merit is for men and women alike, and that whoever prays the night prayer in congregation has the reward of standing half the night, and whoever prays the dawn prayer in congregation that of standing the whole night. 107 108 109

Episode 27: much prostration. The detail is in Thawban. 110

Episode 28: repeating the call to prayer. He relates that Bilal gave the call to prayer and the Prophet said whoever repeats it with certainty enters Paradise, and says the call to prayer is the summary of the believers' creed and of the servant's bond with his Lord. 111 112 113 114 He explains the takbir as God being greater in the heart than everything, the testimony as seeing that there is no god in the universe but God, and the call to success as happiness, achievement and peace in the bond with God, and then mentions the remembrance said after the call and its reward. 114 115 116 117 118

Episode 29: conclusion. He says the goal is not the deeds themselves but the bond with God and being a righteous person useful to those around one, and ends with a supplication on the eve of the Eid. 7 119 120 121
