Summary

Generoso Corano ("The Generous Qur'an") is an Italian rendering of the meanings of the Qur'an by Sheikh Othman, first published in 2015 and in a second edition in 2020; it is one of the newest Muslim-authored translations into Italian, a language with more than ten complete Qur'an translations. 1

The translator

Little is known of Sheikh Othman beyond his affiliation with the Islamic Cultural Center of Fondi, in Lazio, and his translations of other Arabic texts, including the whole of Riyad al-Salihin as I Giardini dei Giusti. 1

Editions

The first edition's introduction dates the completion of the translation to 19 September 2015. A second edition, prepared in 2018, was published in 2020 by the Conveying Islamic Message Society of Alexandria, with a letter in Arabic from al-Azhar's General Department for Research, Writing and Translation dated 2010 at its end. 1 Mykhaylo Yakubovych notes that the letter predates the translation and thinks it was probably taken from another Italian translation project. 1 There is also a pocket edition for missionary use; the reviewer's copy came from the free-literature shelf of the Mosque of Ibn Tulun in Cairo. 1

What it contains

The translation follows the Hafs reading, in modern Italian without archaisms; it is mostly literal with some footnotes, and gives the Arabic names of prophets and nations in parentheses. 1 The edition mirrors the printed mushaf in its 604 pages, its prostration marks and its division into quarters, and keeps some refrains in their place on the page. 1

De Koran: uitleg voor kinderen (Abdul Wahid van Bommel)

The first interpretation of the Qur'an for children in Dutch, by Abdul Wahid van Bommel, an imam and professor at the Islamic University of Rotterdam, in a series of volumes, the first in 2017, the second in 2020 and the third in 2024, each centred on one of the five resolute prophets; he translates the selected verses himself and explains them in a 'philosophising with children' style for ages ten to fourteen, with illustrations by the Bosnian artist Senad Alić.
