Ghurid dynasty

The Ghurid state, kings of Ghor who held the sultanate after the Ghaznavids; mountain kings at Firuzkuh in Subuktigin's days, when Bahramshah of Ghazna killed Muhammad ibn al-Husayn and crucified his brother Suri at Ghazna's gate their brother Ala al-Din al-Husayn marched in 547 AH, took and burned the city — then the state settled with his nephews Ghiyath al-Din and Shihab al-Din who overran Khurasan and India until Shihab al-Din granted Delhi as iqta' to Qutb al-Din Aybak.

Overview

The Ghurid state, the state of the Banu Husayn, kings of Ghur, who held power after the Banu Subuktakin according to Ibn Khaldun. It was founded by Ala al-Din Husayn. 1

Rise

They were kings over the land of Ghur in the days of Subuktakin, and their rule grew strong from Firuzkuh. 1

Bahram Shah the Ghaznavid killed Muhammad ibn Husayn and crucified his brother Shuri at the gate of Ghazna. Their brother Ala al-Din Husayn marched on, took Ghazna in 547 AH and burned it. 1

Ghiyath al-Din and Shihab al-Din

The state settled with his two nephews, Ghiyath al-Din and Shihab al-Din. They subdued Khurasan and the lands of India, until Shihab al-Din granted Delhi as an iqta' to Qutb al-Din Aibak. 1

Ala al-Din al-Husayn ibn al-Husayn, king of Ghor called Jahan-Suz the World-Burner; succeeding his martyred brother Suri he mastered Ghor's mountains and Firuzkuh, proclaimed Sanjar in the khutba, marched on Ghazna in 547 AH and burned it in vengeance for the brothers Bahramshah killed, took Balkh, fought and was captured by Sultan Sanjar who released him back to Firuzkuh — and when his power swelled his nephews Ghiyath al-Din and Shihab al-Din rose, defeated him, yet seated him back on the throne as their puppet until his death in 556, when Ghiyath al-Din took the realm.
