Summary

Sindh before the Arab conquest was headed by a king al-Balādhurī calls Dāhir, seated at al-Rūr on the Mihrān river; his state ended with the conquests of Muḥammad b. al-Qāsim al-Thaqafī, al-Ḥajjāj's governor 1. Al-Balādhurī portrays Dāhir as a king who prepared for war and was resisted in many places until he was killed and his realms thrown into disorder 2.

From Dahir's death to his sons' remnant

Al-Balādhurī reports that Muḥammad b. al-Qāsim "won our vengeance and gained sixty million dirhams and the head of Dāhir" after the battle of al-Rūr 3. He then says the kings returned to their realms after the conquest and that "Jashsha b. Dāhir" went back to Qīqān; and the later news names Ḥabīb, who camped on the bank of Mihrān and received the submission of the people of al-Rūr 4. The record closes with Dāhir's sons in the book's index, a witness that his line stayed in the memory of the conquest books 5.

For young visitors

Before the Muslims opened the land of Sindh it was ruled by a king named Dāhir in the city of al-Rūr; his state ended in a great battle on the river bank.

Research notes

  • Text from the harvested Futūḥ al-Buldān (Maʿārif 1407): the Sindh conquests pp. 624–633. Al-Balādhurī names the king "Dāhir" without spelling out his descent from Chach b. Silāʾij in this chapter; the "Brahmin" line's link to the house of Chach is known from the Chachnāma and other works and was left out of the page text for want of it in the source read. The report of Jashsha b. Dāhir is at p. 630.
