Guadix (Wadi Ash) — a fine city of Granada's district ringed by gardens and rivers, its people specially gifted with letters and love of verse; its fortress Juliana grew the apple proverbial in all al-Andalus. In the last civil war Boabdil and his brother fled there and it rose for their cause 1.

Overview

Wadi Ash is a great city in the districts of Granada, surrounded by gardens and rivers. Al-Maqqari says its people were distinguished in letters and in love of poetry. 2

The fortress and the apples

Among its districts is the fortress of Jaliana, which is large and rivals cities. Its Jaliana apples are famous. Twelve miles lie between the fortress and Wadi Ash. 2

The call of the sultan's sons

Al-Maqqari reports that the call of the sultan's two sons, Abu al-Hasan's sons Abu Abd Allah Muhammad and Abu al-Hajjaj Yusuf, was established there when they fled from their father. Almeria, Baza and Granada gave them their allegiance. 3

The Entry of Abd al-Rahman al-Dakhil into al-Andalus

In year 138 Abd al-Rahman ibn Muawiya ibn Hisham the Umayyad entered al-Andalus and seized it; his days extended and al-Andalus remained in his descendants' hands past the year 400. A man of learning and justice whose mother was Berber, they said: 'The world is ruled by two sons of Berber women — al-Mansur and Abd al-Rahman ibn Muawiya.' By year 148 nothing lay outside al-Mansur's sway but al-Andalus, held by Abd al-Rahman, who did not take the title Commander of the Faithful but only amir — as did his sons.
