Balkh: the city of Tukharistan in Khurasan. al-Ahnaf ibn Qays marched to it, and its people made peace with him for four hundred thousand, or it is said seven hundred thousand; the latter is more firmly established in al-Baladhuri. He appointed over it Usayd ibn al-Mutashammis, or it is said his nephew. 1
