Overview
Afra: a water-place in Palestine, where the Romans agreed to crucify Farwa ibn Amr al-Judhami; they struck off his neck and crucified him there. See the martyrdom of Farwa. 1
Its name
Farwa mentions it in his two verses: "at the water of Afra, above one of the mounts". The editors, citing the commentary on al-Mawahib by al-Zurqani, record it as "Afra", with a fatha on the ayn, a sukun on the fa and a long alif, and note that the shortening of it in the verse is a poetic necessity, and that the originals write it as "Afra". 1
