Overview

A client of al-Hajjaj ibn Yusuf. Yazid ibn Abd al-Malik appointed him over Ifriqiya and the Maghrib, and he arrived there in the year 102 AH 1. al-Baladhuri reports that he branded his guards from among the Berbers with the word "my guard" on their hands, and they banded together to kill him at his prayer-mat during the evening prayer 1. He is the centre of the killing of Yazid ibn Abi Muslim.

With Sulayman ibn Abd al-Malik

al-Mas'udi reports that he was brought in to Sulayman in iron shackles, and Sulayman asked him about al-Hajjaj. He answered that al-Hajjaj had offered them his counsel, kept their covenant and frightened their enemy, and Sulayman released him 2 3.

His dismissal and killing

al-Salabi reports that Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz wrote to dismiss him from Ifriqiya, because he used to display a show of piety and order people to be tortured 4. He was killed in the year 102 AH, after he had resolved to return those among the protected people who had become Muslims to their villages, and to place the poll tax on their necks. The soldiers killed him and appointed Muhammad ibn Yazid over themselves. Yazid ibn Abd al-Malik wrote that he did not approve of what they had done, and confirmed Muhammad ibn Yazid over Ifriqiya 5.

The Berbers

The Berbers in al-Baladhuri on Abdallah ibn Salih's report: they claim descent from Barr ibn Qays — but God gave Qays no son called Barr; rather they are of the Jabbarin whom Dawud fought, whose seats in ancient days were Palestine, the people of Amud — who came to the Maghreb and multiplied there; of them are Lawata, the covenant-holders of Barqa, and the Antabulus folk excepted in Amr ibn al-As's sermon.
