Overview
Tariq ibn Ziyad, a commander in al-Andalus. The reports about him vary, and what follows is a summary of what the museum's sources contain.
al-Tabari reports that Musa ibn Nusayr became angry with him, dismissed him, and sent him to Toledo in the year 93 AH 1.
al-Baladhuri reports that he was an agent of Musa and the first to raid al-Andalus, in the year 92 AH. He conquered it and then conquered Toledo. al-Maqqari reports that Musa sent him across with seven thousand men, most of them Berbers, in four ships, and that he landed at the mountain named after him, Jabal Tariq, in Sha'ban of the year 92 AH 2.
al-Maqqari also reports that when Lodharic advanced on him, Musa sent him reinforcements of five thousand, so that they became twelve thousand 3.
al-Salabi's book records his crossing in Rajab of the year 92 AH and his landing near a mountain known by his name. It treats the sermon attributed to him as a point of stylistic and historical doubt, and the report of the burning of the ships is confused 4 5.
He took part in the conquest of al-Andalus and the conquest of Toledo.
