Sufyan ibn Abdullah al-Thaqafi

Sufyan ibn Abd Allah ibn Abi Rabi'a ibn al-Harith al-Thaqafi, of al-Ta'if, who settled in Medina. Umar ibn al-Khattab appointed him over the tithes and the alms ¹.

Abd Allah and Urwa, the sons of al-Zubayr, narrated from him, as did his son Abd Allah ibn Sufyan, and Nafi' ibn Jubayr ¹.

One of his reports is that he said to the Prophet: "O Messenger of God", and then asked about a matter of Islam. Abu Nu'aym transmits it with a chain in which Ma'iz al-Amiri narrates from Sufyan ibn Abd Allah, and in which al-Zuhri narrates from Muhammad ibn Abd al-Rahman ¹. We have not recorded the wording of the question here, because it is cut off in the text as read.

• The wording of the hadith in which he asked the Prophet has not been read in full. It should be taken from Sahih Muslim or from the musnad books before its text is established.
• Abu Nu'aym comments on the chain by saying "some of the later ones". We have not verified the whole route, and the chains should be checked before the entry is relied on.
