Siraj al-Din, judge of the Two Holy Sanctuaries

Siraj al-Din ʿAbd al-Latif al-Makki al-Hanafi, judge of the Two Holy Sanctuaries, of the noble Hasani line. He was born in Mecca in Shaʿban 789 AH and grew up there. He heard hadith from al-ʿAfif al-Nashawari, al-Jamal al-Asyuti, Ibrahim ibn Siddiq and others. He was granted licences by al-Siraj al-Bulqini, the two hafizs al-Zayn al-ʿIraqi and al-Nur al-Haythami, Siraj Ibn al-Mulaqqin, al-Burhan al-Shami, Abu Hurayra (may God be pleased with him) Ibn al-Dhahabi, Abu al-Khayr Ibn al-ʿAlai and a group of others. Taqi Ibn Fahd compiled a list of his shaykhs for him. He held the post of imam of the Hanbalis in the Sacred Mosque and the judgeship of Mecca. In 847 AH the judgeship of both Holy Sanctuaries, Mecca and Medina, was combined for him, and he held it until he died. He was the first to hold the judgeship of the Hanbalis in both sanctuaries. He entered the Persian lands more than once, and he had a generous share of favour with rulers and notables.

He died in Mecca on the morning of Monday, the seventh of Shawwal 853 AH, of diarrhoea and bloody discharge, and was buried in al-Maʿla 1.
