Summary

A Qurashi Companion who called out the Prophet's words to the people at Arafat during the Farewell Sermon, relaying his words to the great crowd 1.

His account

The one who called out the Messenger of God's words to the people while he stood at Arafat was Rabi'a ibn Umayya ibn Khalaf 2. The crowd that day reached a hundred and twenty-four or a hundred and forty-four thousand, and his voice carried the sermon section by section 3.

In al-Isaba

Ibn Hajar gives him his own entry in al-Isaba, no. 2634: "Rabi'a ibn Umayya ibn Khalaf ibn Wahb ibn Hadhafa ibn Jamh, the Qurashi of the Jamhi clan, brother of Safwan"; he records that he became Muslim on the day of the Conquest, witnessed the Farewell Pilgrimage and has a musnad hadith from it, and that the Prophet ordered him to stand beneath the breast of his mount. 4

The wine incident and his exile

The entry narrates with a chain to al-Zuhri from Sa'id ibn al-Musayyib that Umar exiled Rabi'a ibn Umayya ibn Khalaf over wine, and that Rabi'a drank wine in Umar's time, fled to Syria, then fled to the Caesar and became Christian, dying there. 4 The entry also records Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf (may God be pleased with him)'s report of standing night-guard with Umar in Medina: they saw Rabi'a's house with raised voices of drink inside, and Umar turned away citing "do not spy". 4

For young visitors

A strong-voiced man who stood beside the Prophet repeating the words of his sermon in a loud voice so that all the people at Arafat could hear.

The Farewell Sermon at Arafat

On the Day of Arafa, 9 Dhu al-Hijja 10 AH, the Prophet stood at the foot of the valley before more than a hundred thousand pilgrims and delivered the comprehensive sermon: sanctity of blood and property, abolition of pagan blood-feuds and usury beginning with his own house, counsel on women, the pledge of the Book of God, and the testimony 'have I conveyed?'
