Overview

Murra Abu Ubayd, the grandfather of Muhammad ibn Zayd ibn Ubayd ibn Murra, and grandfather of Nufay' ibn Muhammad, lord of the castle at al-Harra. Al-Baladhuri says that he was among the captives of Ayn al-Tamr, and that his sons say he was Ubayd ibn Murra ibn al-Mu'alla al-Ansari, then al-Zurqi. 1

He has a connection to the siege of Ayn al-Tamr through the captivity.

The data need an additional source: they record no date of his life, and the attribution to the Ansar is his sons' claim as al-Baladhuri relays it.

The mawali (clients)

In al-Baladhuri's Ayn al-Tamr captives, the model of the mawali: captives freed by their patrons whose clientage then attached to them — as Humran ibn Aban, al-Musayyib ibn Najaba's man whom Uthman bought and freed to become Uthman's mawla; Sirin and his brothers, mawali of Anas ibn Malik; Yasar, grandfather of Muhammad ibn Ishaq, mawla of Qays ibn Makhrama ibn al-Muttalib; Nusayr, Musa ibn Nusayr's father, mawla of the Umayyads; and Abu Farwa, grandfather of al-Rabi' ibn Yunus al-Mansur's minister — bought by Na'im al-Asadi then by Uthman for grave-digging.
