In Ibn Khaldun's account
The sons of Chaghatai appointed their paternal uncle over the lands beyond the Oxus, in execution of Genghis Khan's testament to their father. His brother Berke, king of the Qipchaq, urged him to seize the lands of the caliphate, and he gave permission. 1
He learned of the affair of the Isma'ilis, and sent his brother Hulagu to fight them, and sent Qubilai to raid the lands of Khitai. Hulagu struck the Isma'ilis and took their fortresses, and then marched to Baghdad. 1
