Education

Mulla Sinan al-Din Yusuf ibn Khidr Bey

Mulla Sinan al-Din Yusuf ibn Khidr Bey, a Hanafi. He was a learned man with wide knowledge of both the rational and the revealed sciences, with a quick and sharp intelligence. Because his mind was so keen, his nature was given to raising doubts and objections, and he seldom paid attention to establishing the truth of questions. His father rebuked him for this, and once while they were eating meat together, he said to him, "Your doubt has reached such a point that you might doubt whether this plate is made of copper." He replied that this was possible, since the senses can err. His father became angry and struck his head with the plate.

When his father died, he was nearly twenty. Sultan Muhammad gave him one of the eight colleges, then the House of Hadith in Edirne, and then made him his own teacher. He inclined to his company and was never far from him. When Mawla ʿAli al-Qushji came, he studied mathematical sciences with him and wrote glosses on the commentary of al-Jaghmini by Qadi-zada. The sultan made him vizier in 875 AH. Later a matter arose between him and the sultan that led to his dismissal and imprisonment. The scholars of the city gathered and said that he must be released, or they would burn their books in the high court and abandon the king's rule. He was then brought out and handed over to them, and they gave him the judgeship of Lower Hisar together with his college.

He died around 891 AH 1.
