معقل بن يسار

In al-Baladhuri, who related Umar's consultation of al-Hurmuzan and who witnessed Nihawand — he found al-Nu'man ibn Muqarrin breathing his last, washed his face, and gave him the glad tidings of victory, to which al-Nu'man said 'praise God; write to Umar.'

Overview

Ma'qil ibn Yasar al-Muzani of Basra, one of the people of the Pledge of Ridwan; no Companion is known to have borne the kunya Abu Ali other than him, and Ibn Sa'd also records the honorific "Fortress of the State" (hisn al-dawla). He died late in the caliphate of Mu'awiya. 1

In al-Isaba

Ibn Hajar gives him his own entry in al-Isaba, no. 8468: "Ma'qil ibn Yasar ibn Abd Allah ibn Ma'bar ibn Hiraq ibn Abi ibn Ka'b ibn Abd Thawr ibn Hudma ibn Latim ibn Uthman ibn Amr al-Muzani" — Muzayna being the mother of Uthman ibn Amr, so the sons were traced to her — and records that he became Muslim before al-Hudaybiyya and witnessed the Pledge of Ridwan; Ibn Hibban counts him a Companion. 2

The canal of Ma'qil

Ibn Hajar cites al-Baghawi: it was he who dug the Canal of Ma'qil at Basra on Umar's orders, so it was named after him; he settled in Basra, built a house there and died there in the caliphate of Mu'awiya. 2
