Overview
Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn al-Hasan ibn Durayd, a poet and philologist who died in Baghdad in the caliphate of al-Qahir in 321 AH. Al-Mas'udi says that in his time he excelled in poetry and reached the summit of philology. 2
On language and poetry
Al-Mas'udi says that he stood in the field of language in the place of al-Khalil ibn Ahmad, and put forward things not found in the books of earlier scholars. Among his fine poems is the Maqsura, in which he praised Shah ibn Mikal, and a number of poets answered it. 2
He wrote a separate book gathering the words of the Prophet ﷺ and a summary of his sayings, which he called al-Mujtaba. 3
Birth and books
He was born in Basra in the Salih quarter in 223 AH, and Ibn al-Nadim says that after his death his books went to Fars. 4
He is credited with Amali Ibn Durayd (dictations). 5
