Overview
Abu Bakr Abd Allah ibn Muhammad ibn Ziyad ibn Wasil ibn Maymun al-Naysaburi, a jurist and transmitter of hadith, a client of Aban ibn Uthman ibn Affan, who settled in Baghdad. He was born in 238 AH and died in 324 AH, according to al-Shirazi. 3
His learning and asceticism
Al-Shirazi describes him as an ascetic who did not sleep at night for forty years, and who prayed the dawn prayer with the ablution of the night prayer. He combined jurisprudence and hadith, and had additions to the book of al-Muzani. 3
He quotes al-Daraqutni saying: "I have never seen anyone with a better memory than him." 3
A session in Baghdad
Al-Shirazi relates that a man asked in a session in Baghdad about the word "its earth" in the hadith that made the earth a mosque. None of those present had an answer, until Abu Bakr was asked and he recited the hadith from memory. 3 4
Both the dates of his birth and death are from al-Shirazi alone, and need an additional source.
