Overview
Qadi al-qudat Jamal al-Din Abu'l-Qasim 'Abd al-Samad ibn Muhammad ibn Abi'l-Fadl al-Ansari al-Khazraji al-Dimashqi the Shafi'i, known as Ibn al-Hurastani; born in 520, he heard the elders, taught, gave fatwas, excelled in the school and held the highest isnad of his time — a righteous worshipper among the just judges. He travelled to Aleppo for fiqh under Abu'l-Hasan al-Muradi, deputised in the judiciary for Ibn Abi 'Asrun, then held the qada' of al-Sham late in life, taught at the 'Aziziyya and sat in judgment at the Mujahidiyya. 1
Abu Shama's testimony
Abu Shama reports that Shaykh 'Izz al-Din ibn 'Abd al-Salam never saw a greater jurist and began his own studies on him; he had memorised al-Ghazali's Wasit, refused the judgeship until pressed, was strict and upright in the early manner in dress and abstinence, held the office two years and seven months, and the Damascenes agreed he never missed a congregational prayer at the mosque unless ill. He died on 4 Dhu'l-Hijja 614, aged ninety-five. 1
