Overview

Hanzala ibn Safwan al-Kalbi, brother of Bishr ibn Safwan, who governed Ifriqiya, as al-Baladhuri mentions. 1.

Governorship of Ifriqiya

Al-Baladhuri holds that he was appointed over Ifriqiya after Kulthum ibn Iyad, fought the Kharijites, and died there while still governor. In one copy he is "Abu Bishr" and not "brother of Bishr". Abd al-Rahman ibn Habib al-Fihri left him when he rebelled against al-Walid ibn Yazid, and this is connected to the account of the rule of Abd al-Rahman ibn Habib. 1.

Al-Salabi's "The Umayyad State" adds that Hisham restored him to the command of Egypt for a second time in 119 AH, then sent him to Ifriqiya in 124 AH after the killing of Kulthum ibn Iyad al-Qushayri. 2.

The Killing of Yazid ibn Abi Muslim in His Prayer-Place

In al-Baladhuri: when Yazid ibn Abd al-Malik ruled he gave Yazid ibn Abi Muslim — al-Hajjaj ibn Yusuf's mawla — Ifriqiya and the Maghreb; he came to Ifriqiya in year 102, his guard being Berbers, and he branded on each man's hand 'my guard' — so they blackened his path, whispered one to another, and conspired to kill him: he went out one evening for maghrib prayer and they killed him in his prayer-place. Yazid then gave it to Bishr ibn Safwan al-Kalbi, who struck off the neck of Abdallah ibn Musa ibn Nusayr — he being accused of the killing and of stirring the people against him.
