Overview
Conrad, Marquis of Tyre, a Frankish prince among the commanders of the Crusades. Ibn al-Athir described him as the greatest of the devils of the Franks, and he was killed on 13 Rabi al-Akhir 588 AH. 2
His killing
Ibn al-Athir relates that two Batinites in the dress of monks, sent by the chief of the Isma'ilis Sinan, killed him. They had attended the lord of Sidon and Ibn Birzan for six months until these trusted them. 2
They wounded him after the invitation of the bishop of Tyre, and then one of them finished killing him in the church where he had taken refuge. 3
Attribution of the killing
Ibn al-Athir mentions that the Franks blamed the killing on the king of England, so that he could be sole king of the coast. 3
Notes
- The Gregorian date of death (about 28 April 1192 CE) is derived from the Hijri date by calculation.
