Overview
'Amr ibn al-Layth al-Saffar, ruler of the Saffarid state after his brother Ya'qub; his rule ended when he fell captive to the Samanid Isma'il near Balkh. 1
Capture and death
His defeat came because the people of Balkh had grown weary of his soldiers and their injustice; Isma'il advanced, 'Amr's army broke and his mount mired, so he was taken. Isma'il embraced him, served him and took his oath, but al-Mu'tadid's envoy demanded him and Isma'il surrendered him. He was brought into Baghdad on a Bactrian camel, then imprisoned; the vizier al-Qasim ibn 'Ubaydallah killed him on the day of al-Mu'tadid's death in 289 AH, after a reign of more than twenty years. 2
Al-Qushayri relates that 'Amr ibn al-Layth was seen in a dream and asked what God had done with him; he said: I once looked down from a mountain on my armies and wished I had stood with the Messenger of God ﷺ to aid and support him — so God thanked me and forgave me. 3
