Overview
Abu Ibrahim Isma'il b. Ahmad b. Asad b. Saman, amir of the Samanid state; he defeated 'Amr b. al-Layth al-Saffar and sent him to al-Mu'tadid, who wrote his patent over Khurasan and sent him robes of honour. 1
His realm
When the caliphate passed to al-Muktafi his patent was renewed, appointing him from Rayy to Transoxiana and the Turk lands; Isma'il built ribats in the desert marches, garrisoned each with a thousand horsemen and endowed them, and a great army of the leading Turks reached his land. In 280 news came of his raid into the Turk lands — he killed many, took their king's city and some ten thousand captives, a thousand dirhams falling to each Muslim horseman. 2
