Summary

Under Ali ibn Ma'mun, Shohruxmirzo Ismoilov writes, Khwarazm's economic and political power grew and the kinds of coins and the number of mints increased: 33 types are known, struck at Jurjaniyya, Kath, Farawa, Nasa and Bukhara. 1

His coins and mints

  • Kath: a dirham of about 392 AH with the city's name, the title Khwarazmshah and the word thaman, which the author takes as the name of a denomination, and on the reverse the caliph al-Qadir bi-llah; it weighs 4.85 g. There are also fulus with an octagonal panel reading "Ali, Kath" and "Khwarazm Shah". 2 3
  • Jurjaniyya: dirhams with the title "the just king", one type dated 396 AH, another 389 AH. 4 5
  • Farawa: a dirham of 392 AH with the title "the noble king". Farawa lay four days from Jurjaniyya and belonged to the Samanid state; the author suggests Nuh ibn Mansur may have given it to the Ma'munids for services rendered. 6 7 8
  • Bukhara: a fals of 390/1000 resembling Samanid fulus, which the author reads as evidence that Ali held Bukhara for a time; he raises and then sets aside the possibility that the Samanids or Qarakhanids struck it to order. 7 8
  • Nasa: two dirhams from the Kreshcheny Baran hoard, with the title "the just king", weighing 6.85 and 6.95 g. 7 9

Hoards

In 1905 a hoard of 616 tenth-century coins, most struck between 387 and 399 AH, was found at the village of Kreshcheny Baran in Kazan province; 46 of them are coins of Ali ibn Ma'mun. 2 One of the Jurjaniyya types was found in the excavations at Bilyarsk in Tatarstan in 2001. 5
