Overview

Al-Wathiq billah Ibrahim ibn al-Mustamsik, who claimed the caliphate in Cairo around 740 and 741 AH. He was the son of the heir apparent al-Mustamsik Muhammad ibn al-Hakim. 2

His character

His grandfather appointed him to the caliphate, thinking he was fit for it. Then he saw that he was not fit, because of his absorption in play and his association with the base, so he turned from him to his son al-Mustakfi. 2

The report says that he was a cause of enmity between al-Mustakfi and the sultan through the tale-bearing he carried to the sultan. When al-Mustakfi died at Qus, the sultan gave him the allegiance, and the common people called him "the Seeker of Alms by God". 2

Al-Suyuti quotes from Ibn Fadl Allah a description of his conduct: he played with pigeons, and bought rams for butting and cocks for fighting. When the sultan's death approached he repented, dismissed him, and gave the allegiance to the heir apparent of al-Mustakfi. 2
