Overview

Abu Bakr 'Abdallah b. Ahmad al-Marwazi, al-Qaffal the Younger — shaykh of Khurasan's Shafi'is and sayyid of the Khurasani notables (Qaffal the Elder being al-Shashi, shaykh of the Iraqis' school, though al-Marwazi is the more cited in the fiqh books); he was called al-Qaffal because he made locks in his early life and excelled at the craft until he made a lock whose parts and key weighed four grains — at thirty he felt his own cleverness and turned to knowledge. 1
