Overview

Al-Mustakfi billah, Abu al-Rabi' Sulayman ibn al-Hakim, the third of the Abbasid caliphs of Cairo, who ruled from 701 to 740 AH. The museum has another caliph with the same name from Baghdad, whom the sources cited here also mention. 2

Caliph of Cairo

He was born in the middle of Muharram 684 AH, and was given the allegiance by an appointment from his father in Jumada al-Ula 701 AH, and the khutba was given for him from the pulpits in Egypt and Syria. They used to live in al-Kabsh, and the sultan moved them to the citadel and gave them a house to themselves. In 702 AH the Tatars attacked Syria, and the sultan went out with the caliph to fight them, and there was victory. 2

Then a dispute arose between him and the sultan in 736 AH, and he was imprisoned in the tower, and exiled with his family, about a hundred souls, to Qus in 737 AH. He died there in Sha'ban 740 AH, and appointed his son Ahmad as successor. 3

The Abbasid al-Mustakfi in Baghdad

Other sources in the museum's data name a Baghdadi caliph with this title, Abu al-Qasim Abd Allah ibn Ali al-Mukafi, who was given the allegiance in 333 AH and deposed in 334 AH. Accounts of his end differ. Ibn al-Athir says al-Muti' blinded him and he remained in prison until he died in 338 AH. Ibn al-Jawzi says he died in the house of Abu al-Husayn ibn Buyah of a dissolution of the blood, and it is also said that al-Muti' blinded him. 4 5 6

The museum needs to review the merging of the two caliphs into one entry, because they are two different people.

أحمد بن بويه معز الدولة

The Daylamite Ahmad ibn Buya; he entered Baghdad, was invested as Mu'izz al-Dawla — Imad and Rukn al-Dawla his brothers, all three titles on the coinage — the first Daylamite to hold Iraq. He sequestered the caliph at five thousand dirhams a day, patronised wrestlers and swimmers till men swam cooking meat in pots on their arms, then dragged al-Mustakfi from his throne, blinded him and set up al-Muti'.
