Overview

Al-Layth b. 'Ali b. al-Layth, nephew of Ya'qub and 'Amr b. al-Layth al-Saffar; he seized Sistan in 296, left his brother al-Mu'addal b. 'Ali over it and marched to Fars — Sabuk al-Subkari fled him seeking the caliph's succour, so al-Muqtadir fielded armies in Ramadan 296 under Mu'nis al-Muzaffar, Badr al-Kabir and al-Husayn b. Hamdan; they met al-Layth, routed his host and captured him, his brother Muhammad and his son Isma'il — they entered Baghdad in Muharram 297 and al-Layth was paraded on the elephant. 1

The dynasty's end

Then his brother al-Mu'addal ruled Sistan until Ahmad b. Isma'il the Samanid took it — and the Saffarid matter ended. 1
