Overview
Al-Julanda ibn Mas'ud, an Ibadi imam in Oman. He led his followers in a revolt against the caliph al-Saffah, and he sent them an army under Khazim ibn Khuzayma, and al-Julanda was killed in 134 AH. 2
The revolt
Ahmad Amin relates in "Duha al-Islam" that the Kharijites of Oman, headed by al-Julanda and his Ibadi companions, stirred as soon as al-Saffah had settled into the caliphate. 2 See the Ibadi revolt in Oman and the Ibadis.
The fighting
Khazim's army went by sea until it anchored on the coast of Oman. The fighting was fierce and back and forth. Then Khazim's men advised setting fire to oil-soaked torches in the wooden houses, and while al-Julanda's men were busy with their houses, Khazim's soldiers charged them. 2
The end
Al-Julanda was killed among those who were killed. The report says that the dead came to about ten thousand, and that their heads were sent to Basra in 134 AH. 2
Notes for researchers
- The report comes from Ahmad Amin's book alone, and he calls the Ibadis "Kharijites"; this is the source's description, not the museum's. An Ibadi source is needed to balance the account.
