Overview

Al-Malik al-Amjad Majd al-Din Abu'l-Muzaffar Bahram Shah b. Farrukhshah; he ruled Baalbek fifty years after his father — bounteous, generous, a poet and benefactor — until al-Ashraf b. al-'Adil drove him out and he moved to Damascus. 1

His killing

In the Shadharat: a handsome mamluk of his had stolen writing-tools of gold worth two hundred dinars which surfaced with him; on the night of Wednesday 8 Shawwal he opened the treasury, took al-Amjad's sword — al-Amjad was playing chess — struck him on the shoulder and stabbed his flank, and he died. The mamluk fled, the mamluks chased and killed him; al-Amjad was buried in his father's mausoleum on the northern terrace. He was seen in a dream — asked "what did God do with you?" he said: "I was, for my sin, in fear * that fear has left me * I secured my soul from its calamities * I lived, O man, when I died." 2
