al-Aghlab ibn Salim al-Tamimi

الأغلب بن سالم التميمي

c. 786 CE · c. 169 AH† †

† Hijri date derived by computation from the Gregorian/Julian date; it may differ from the transmitted date by a day or two.

In al-Baladhuri: of Marw al-Rudh's people among the Masawwida from Khurasan; Musa al-Hadi gave him the Maghreb, Harish of the Tunis frontier army besieged him at Qayrawan, he sallied and fought, an arrow struck him in battle and he fell dead, his companions unaware — so he was called al-Aghlab al-Shahid.

Overview

Al-Aghlab ibn Salim from the people of Marw al-Rudh, who came from Khurasan with the Abbasid black-clad supporters, according to al-Baladhuri. Al-Hadi appointed him over the Maghrib. 1

His killing

Hurayth, from the frontier army of Tunis, besieged him in Kairouan. He went out to fight him. An arrow struck him in the battle and he fell dead while his companions did not know of his wound, so he was called "al-Aghlab the martyr". 1

His death was in the governorship of al-Hadi, around 786 CE; the Gregorian date is derived. For details, see the killing of al-Aghlab.
