Overview

Abu Sa'd 'Abd al-Rahman b. Muhammad — named Ma'mun — b. 'Ali al-Mutawalli, the Shafi'i jurist of Nishapur; he joined learning with religion, good conduct and thorough debate, a strong hand in usul, fiqh and khilaf — taking fiqh at Marw from Abu'l-Qasim al-Furani and at Bukhara from Abu Sahl al-Ibhuwari. 1

The Nizamiyya

He took the teaching chair of Baghdad's Nizamiyya after Abu Ishaq al-Shirazi's death — deposed, restored, and kept it until his death — and a company of imams was formed under him; he composed Tatimmat al-ibana in fiqh but death overtook him before its completion. 1
